Contests are an important element of Facebook marketing and when they’re properly promoted and managed they can be gold.

The problem is that much of the time they are not. All too often contests turn up in my Facebook Newsfeed asking me to “Like and Share to win an iPad”, regardless of the fact that this breaches Facebook’s terms and conditions and, depending on the country, is illegal.

Hey, this is great! Especially the points about accepting T&Cs – I hadn’t given this much thought until now.

However, we’ve found that by advertising on Facebook you end up with a bunch of fake followers.

In fact, I find advertising on Facebook a real waste of time and money. We’ve run several sweepstakes, when we used FB ads we ended up with 100’s of new followers, all with blank profiles used for entering competitions. Which is fine if you just want more followers – but we’d rather have quality followers that will engage with our brand.

Newsletters and blog posts seem to be the best way to attract real people to like your page.
