Yesterday afternoon Instagram confirmed that ads would be coming to photo streams. In a blog post they announced the changes, coming to US streams in the next couple of months: “We have big ideas for the future, and part of making them happen is building Instagram into a sustainable business.”
Users in the USA will begin to see videos and photos from those they don’t follow, but international roll out has not been confirmed yet. Instagram have promised they will be ‘a small number of beautiful, high quality photos and videos’ and from trusted brands who are already members of the Instagram community.
Instagram is, at the moment, focusing on keeping the feel of the site the same – ensuring users aren’t bombarded with ads featuring poor quality images. This move may see a backlash from users, but Instagram have long needed to prove they can be sustainable, and as other social networks have seen, advertising is the best way to achieve this.
