Now that timeline is mandatory, many brands are busy trying to work out how to make best use of it. One of the big changes is how apps are used and displayed. You can create 12 different tabs and display your 4 favourites on your profile page. These are a great way to increase your fan base and engage with visitors – but also post a tough choice: which apps should you feature?
The most suitable apps will vary from business to business, but here are the ones we recommend:
1. Welcome page
A lot of brands will have previously used a landing page for new visitors. Timeline has removed this option, but don’t make your landing page redundant; turn it into a tab for your timeline page. A welcome page offers much more creative freedom than your main profile does, so why not use it to offer promotions, discounts, or free material to fans of your page?
2. Polls or quizzes
A simple way to make your Facebook page more engaging. People can’t resist a chance to share their views, whether it’s just a bit of fun or you’re testing the water for your next product. It’s also a great way to get feedback about recent promotions, products, events or even your competition.
3. Email list
Email updates are a key way for businesses and organisations to interact with their clients and Facebook is a great way to attract email subscriptions. All the main email platforms have an app, including Constant Contact (see bel0w). As well as making it easy for people to sign up, it will tell you exactly who opens your emails, when, and what links they click.
Blogs can still be an important tool for customer engagement by helping to generate brand awareness, spread buzz and allow you to show off your expertise. If already post to a blog on your website you can use an app to add it to your Facebook page. Networked Blogs is a free and simple option for this.
Social media is becoming an important recruitment tool and it’s a great way to cut your recruitment spending. As a result of this, many companies (including Starbucks, Playstation and Red Bull) have chosen to add a jobs or careers tab to their Facebook page. Apps like Work for us and Branchout are free and easy to use, and it seems a real waste not to leverage those 800 million users Facebook users out there.
Disclosure: Constant Contact, Agorapulse and Engage Sciences have all been (or still are) sponsors of Our Social Times events.
