Social media integration is essential for any WordPress site, but which of the many thousands of social media plug-ins should you opt for?
Whether you run a successful e-commerce site serving millions or a blog in need of more followers, social media integration cannot be ignored.
Sharing your content with the world – whether directly from the back-end or by enabling your users to do it for you – is critical to driving traffic and attracting new followers.
Luckily there’s a plug-in for that. Thousands actually, and here we’ve select our favourites. We’ve divided them into back-end plug-ins aimed at site admins and front-end plug-ins that target users.

There are a whole host of social sharing plug-ins out there, but Social Warfare is one of the most feature rich. Fully responsive, Warfare specialises in social sharing buttons and does so impressively. It looks elegant straight out of the box, but still offers users a huge variety of customisation options if the original flavour doesn’t quite match your theme. Features include the option to disable share counts until a specified target has been hit, and the ability for users to tweet a section of text directly from a post.

An alternative to Social Warfare, Monarch is a social buttons plug-in that prides itself on its customisation options. Users have a choice of five location options to display their buttons, from a floating sidebar to automatic pop-ups. Buttons can even be added to video or images, which means practically every element of your site can be shared. User behaviour can also be targeted, with buttons appearing after a certain action such as a purchase or period of inactivity.

Leadeo is a useful plug-in that turns your video content into a lead generation tool. OnePress Social Locker
Social Locker is one of a range of novel social plug-ins that hides or restricts content until a user agrees to share it. This might be considered a risky strategy that could lead to increased exit rates, but the potential benefits are obvious. If you have an in-demand piece of content on your site, people might be incentivised to read it in return for a Facebook like or a tweet. The ‘lock’ message can be suitably customised to wording of your choice, and the free version even comes with a reporting tool that enables you to track the effectiveness of your locks.
