Nike named most engaging brand at London 2012, despite not being a sponsor
Official sponsor Adidas received a 44% uplift in online traffic during the Olympics, but it was their rival and non-sponsor Nike that proved the most engaging brand. According to analytics platform Social Bakers, Nike also dominated in the Twittersphere with over 16,000 tweets associating the brand with the word ‘Olympic’, as opposed to 9,295 for Adidas (see image above). The full results, featured on The Wall, also show that Subway dominated McDonalds and the BBC trounced Sky.
Facebook testing promoted posts in newsfeed on non-fans
Brands may soon be able to advertise in the newsfeed of non-fans, according to Mashable. There are questions over the effectiveness of promoted posts which this change would address by allowing them to reach a much larger audience. However, the newsfeed has always been exclusive territory for friends and brands the user has actively liked, so this move may not be well received by all.
Faceook reports average position in newsfeed for sponsored stories
Facebook are adding new metrics for sponsored stories, including average newsfeed position. Inside Facebook say that “this additional data will help advertisers understand how their ads are performing on the social network and how they might better optimize campaigns.”
Spice Girls break Twitter world record during Olympic closing ceremony
Amazingly, it was the Spice Girls that provided the most tweeted moment of the Games with a new world record of 116,000 Tweets-per-minute. That eclipsed Usain Bolts 80,000 TPM and Andy Murray’s 57,000 TPM. More fascinating Olympic social media statistics are available here.
80% bot claim examined
Last week we reported the claim that one Facebook advertising campaign received a staggering 80% of clicks from bots, but the latest research, reported on Search Engine Watch, suggests that whilst the problem does exist there are significant holes in the claim.
Introducing Pinterest for Android, iPad and iPhone… at last
Pinterest has finally found its way onto Android and iPad. Pinterest users have long been waiting for this update and, as Pinterest acknowledge in their official blog, they have been very vocal about it. After Pinterest’s announcement last week that they were scrapping invites, this is their latest move to becoming a more open and user friendly network.
Jason Manford ousts ‘internet idiots’ after Gary Barlow comments
Social Media has come in for some bad press recently with abusive Tweets and comments often leading to legal action. Comedian Jason Manford confronted the issue this week after a small number of his fans, or ‘internet idiots’, criticised Take That singer Gary Barlow for performing at the Olympic closing ceremony so soon after losing his baby, Poppy. Subway’s Facebook page spammed with anime sandwich porn
Finally, Subway’s social media team have been busy this week, deleting anime sandwich porn from their page. A group of anime fans started censoring images with ‘foot long sandwiches’ and it seems they thought Subway would appreciate the images.
